To Kill a Mockingbird - 2023

Adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, To Kill a Mockingbird opens in a sleepy Alabama town in the midst of the Great Depression, where Scout and her brother, Jem, live with their widowed father, Atticus Finch.

Reminiscent of a bygone era, the play immerses us in a simpler time as the children play outside in the summer, act out stories and muse about their mysterious neighbor, Boo Radley.

The facade of the seemingly peaceful town begins to crack when a young black man is accused of a terrible crime.

Driven by an unshakeable moral conviction, local lawyer Atticus defends the man in a trial that sends violent waves through the community.

Timeless and lingering, this hard-hitting work explores prejudice, compassion and the courage to do what is right.

Parental Advisory - Tyler Civic Theatre’s production of To Kill a Mockingbird is based on the 1961 Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Harper Lee.

Lee’s original and sometimes offensive language is present in the dramatization adapted by Christopher Sergel.

Likewise, there will be references to sexual violence and racial injustice.

Here are comments from the Director.

APPROPRIATENESS OF LANGUAGE IN
TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD

Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird is a classic novel written in 1961, about a period of time, 1935, when Jim Crow laws abounded in the South. Though socially unacceptable today, the language indicating race at that time was crude and used often by almost everybody in that region. For the theater to reinforce how that prejudice plays a part in the narrative and plot of the story, we must use that same language. We have not taken this lightly and have and will caution audiences so they can make their own decisions on appropriateness for themselves and their families.
