ANGEL STREET (Gaslight)
ANGEL STREET (Gaslight) by Patrick Hamilton
Directed by James F. Ring
Written in 1938 and set in 1880, the play’s popularity was such that
its title (Gaslight) is now commonly used as a transitive verb, defined within
Webster’s dictionary as meaning: “to psychologically manipulate (a person)
usually over an extended period of time so that the victim questions the
validity of their own thoughts, perception of reality, or memories and
experiences confusion, loss of confidence and self-esteem, and doubts
concerning their own emotional or mental stability.”
The play juxtaposes scenes that are darkly comedic with scenes
involving psychological abuse, threats of physical violence, and marital
infidelity. The play is, accordingly, recommended for mature audiences only.
