BHAKTHI - THE UNWAVERING FLAME
Supraja Sundaresan – Euless, TX – 2nd time at FW Fringe – BHAKTHI – THE UNWAVERING FLAME – (Indian Dance)
An Ode to Shiva is both a personal offering and an exploration of unwavering devotion. Growing up in Mylapore, Chennai, in the shadow of the Kapaleeshwarar Temple, faith was never an abstract idea—it was woven into the rhythm of everyday life. I watched my mother, whose devotion to Lord Shiva remained steadfast through every season and circumstance, make her way to the temple with quiet conviction. That unwavering faith shaped my understanding of bhakti long before I understood its depth.
It was during the annual Panguni festival that I truly witnessed the spirit of Mylapore. Through the night, thousands gather in eager anticipation of Kapaleeshwarar’s procession. The resonant temple bells, thunderous drums, chants, and the collective longing of an entire community transform the streets into a living expression of devotion. In that moment, I understood that bhakti is not merely belief—it is a force that unites people through hope, surrender, and love.
Inspired by these memories, this Bharatanatyam varnam follows a Nayika whose heart is wholly surrendered to Lord Shiva, the Lord of Mount Kailasa. Speaking through her confidante, she pleads for reunion with her beloved. The cool moonlight, playful birds, paired deer, and the arrival of spring only deepen her longing, as every sight in nature reminds her of the divine presence she seeks. She praises Shiva as the Lord worshipped by Vishnu, the father of Muruga, and the eternal source of wisdom and grace.
Yet beneath the poetry lies something deeper than separation. The Nayika’s longing is unwavering faith. She does not question whether she belongs to Shiva; she knows she does. Her yearning is the soul’s journey toward union with the Paramatma, sustained by complete trust and surrender.
This work is my offering to the faith that shaped my childhood, to the sacred streets of Mylapore, and to the enduring power of devotion that continues to inspire my artistic journey.
