The Sound of Music In Austria!s

We are excited to introduce the Trio Phantasy of Austrian composer Joseph Marx (1882-1964) to our audience! Marx, born in Graz, the capital of Austria, studied violin, cello and piano, and took degrees in philosophy and art history, all the while composing music at Graz University. Most of his compositions were art songs, and gained such popularity, that he was hailed the successor to Schubert and Hugo Wolf as song composer. On the strength of these works, he obtained the position of professor of theory at the Vienna Music Academy. He also was an adviser to the Turkish government in laying the foundations of a conservatory in Ankara. Marx's music drew from many sources. He could be called a late romantic impressionist. Although one can hear certain affinities with the music of Debussy, Ravel, Respighi, Richard Strauss, Brahms, and Mahler, his sound is nonetheless his own. Long out of print, his trio is now available by the specialists in rare sheetmusic; Editionsilvertrust. Short clips of this work can be heard at www.editionsilvertrust.com, a favorite source of Ms. Chenoweth for the music of Timeless Concerts. Of course, we cannot have an Austrian themed concert without including music of the famous musical, that portrayed the Von Trapp family of Austria! The Sound of Music by Rodgers and Hammerstein! We promise at least one sing-along! Post-concert party pianist: Steve Stroud. Violinist LeeAnne Chenoweth, cellist Karen Maddox Smith, pianist Heejung Kang, soprano Judith Rodriguez, and tenors Sergio Cepeda and Don O'Neal LeBlanc
