Character Development Summary (Ages 16+)

Laura Jennings, Instructor
Saturday, May 11, 2024, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm

The character that has no lines and the character that delivers a three-page monologue both have one giant thing in common: they are absolutely nothing unless an actor fleshes out their existence. Character development takes work, skill, creativity, and understanding of your body. Your roles are more memorable, more relatable to the audience, more fun, and you are more castable if you can learn how to master creating fully fleshed out characters.

In this three-hour intensive, actors will learn tricks and tips on how to create characters: (1) from scratch by experimenting with voice, accents, and reactions; (2) by pulling information from scripts and context, and (3) exploring options for characters with little or no lines, by developing body physicality and facial expressions. Actors will also learn to adapt their characters for direction.

Please be on time. Bring snacks and water. Dress comfortably for movement, bring glasses, if needed to read.
